James Carrington was born in Chicago in 1953 and raised in the village of Winnetka, Ill. From an early age he displayed a natural affinity and aptitude toward Art and Music. Originally choosing music as a focus for a career, James, interestingly enough, has always managed to maintain a synchronous involvement with the two mediums. Upon Graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music Boston in 1975 with a degree in classical guitar, James spent the next several decades in New York City where he held a teaching position at the New School for Social research. He now resides in San Francisco, California and has been concentrating his creative efforts on oil painting.
Primarily self schooled in art, James has forged a unique and imaginative style which sets him quite apart from the commonplace. As an avid collector and aficionado of early 20th Century design for several decades, James has been profoundly influenced by most of the important modern art movements of that period, in particular, Cubism, Constructivism, Futurism, Metaphysical/surreal Art and Russian Avant Garde. James also cites, as a visual stimulus for his artwork, a variety of diverse interests ranging from architecture to early science fiction pulps.
"I try to incorporate into my painting some of the visual aesthetics from the past that have affected me so deeply and build on them to convey something new, so that it is not merely archaic emulation, but rather ongoing explorations for a new century."
